For Céline Saint-Marc Calbrix, Buyer and Wine Product Manager with Système U, Vinexpo offers the chance to develop business with suppliers at a time when consumer demands are changing. We asked her to tell us a little about her responsibility within Système U’s wine operation.

The buyer’s mission is not limited to choosing the wines. It involves selecting suppliers, conducting negotiations and reaching the best quality-to-price ratio; all this is done with respect and with ethics. The objective is to reduce costs and stocks, while increasing turnover. It is also about being the representative of our brand and carrying its messages to the winegrowers. That’s an exciting job!

What are the key trends in consumer preference that are affecting your work?
The consumer is demanding. He or she appreciates when the bottle tells a story. Today, there are more and more “story drinkers” – stories of people, lives, passions. Also, environmental issues are becoming important, with organic, biodynamic, vegan, sulphite-free and natural wines.

What are you hoping to achieve at Vinexpo Paris?
Vinexpo Paris is a workplace for me. It is an opportunity to develop business with suppliers who I know. And to meet those who I would not have met were it not for this event. It is also a place where I get valuable information from masterclasses and conferences.

Will you be attending any of the master classes or seminar sessions? If so, which ones and why?
Yes, of course, although the schedule is tight. I listen to the news and expert opinions. I intend to go to the Crus bourgeois du Médoc tasting and to attend Gérard Bertrand’s conference on organic wines around the world.
