Alain Juppé, Mayor of Bordeaux, is no doubt the best person in town to give a few tips on places to visit in this city when one has a little spare time alongside Vinexpo. We asked him for his pointers on the best places to savour wines in the city.
The wine Bar of the CIVB (Inter-professional Council of Bordeaux Wines), where one can on the one hand taste, but also be advised on a vintage, or an appellation. The range offered there is rich, and competent professionals can guide your choice. Many other establishments also offer tastings and I invite our visitors to discover them according to their walks in Bordeaux.
Can you suggest to our readers a “must” to see or do during a first visit to Bordeaux?
La Cité du Vin of course! We have just celebrated the first anniversary of its opening and its frequentation goals have already been achieved with more than 420,000 visitors, including a high proportion of foreigners. As a beacon of our wine tourism policy, it is a remarkable tool for promoting the culture of wine but also an invitation to discover the vineyards of the world, the terroirs and the savoir-faire.
ONE CAN DISCOVER THE RICH HERITAGE OF BORDEAUX, ONE OF THE MAJOR ASSETS OF OUR UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE RANKING
Can you recommend an unusual place that visitors should discover?
The Pey-Berland tower, for a 360° view of Bordeaux. From the top of this monument, one of the highest in the city, one can discover the rich heritage of Bordeaux, one of the major assets of our UNESCO world heritage ranking. It is also from there that one can admire the curve of the Garonne and better understand why Bordeaux is called the “Port of the moon”.
